The Landes region of France contains Europe's largest forest which meets the beautiful white beaches of the Atlantic coast. Known as the “Côte d’Argent” (Silver Coast) its beach stretches 100km from Biarritz to Arachon. The beach at Moliets is near the middle of this coast and has some of the best conditions for surfing in the area because of the powerful waves.
The region's mild climate makes it possible to holiday here year round. The gentle spring and summer are perfect for canoeing and boating, autumn is great for surfing and make the most of winter winds by trying sand yachting. Golf at the prestigious championship course, cycling, walking and horse riding are all activities that can be pursued year round thanks to the wonderful climate.
Moliets et Maa village centre
Moliets et Maa is a delightful Landais village with many buildings built in the traditional timber style of the region. Visit the Chapel Saint Laurent in Maâ, situated close to "Tuc de la Citadelle", an ancient Templar's headquarters on the pilgrim's route of Saint Jacques de Compostelle, which marks an important historical time.

The Chapel in Maa Traditionally built house in Moliets
Around Moliets there are numerous cycle trails and
walking paths including the GR8 and the route of St Jacques de
Compostelle. Landes has 154 km of cycling tracks, by the ocean and
inland to lakes and pretty villages. You can cycle the length of
the Silver coast via a network of cycle tracks in an exceptional natural
environment.
cycling
in the forests
The Courant
d'Huchet is an estuary that reaches the sea at Moliets and is a
protected nature reserve. At 10km long, originating at the lake at Leon,
it is known as French Amazonia because of the tropical nature of the
flora and fauna. Discover hundreds of species of plants, birds and
mammals. Try your hand at fishing -
you can catch pike-perch, black-bass, roach, carp, tench and eel.
Sample the gastronomic delights of the region,
where you
will find Foie Gras, Chalosse beef, as well as poultry bearing the
famous Label Rouge. Also high-quality crops are grown here, such as kiwi
fruit, maize and asparagus. The forest gives way to vines so try the Vin Délimité de Qualité Supérieur (Quality Wine
PSR), Tursan which is distinctive and easy to drink.

The pretty Basque town of St Jean de Luz
If you fancy a change from the beach why not explore the delightful towns and ports along this coast such as Capbreton, Biarritz, Bayonne and St Jean de Luz. All are worth exploring with charming streets, cafes and shops. Or try the town of Dax with it's marvelous spa and casino. If you want to go further, why not have lunch in a tapas bar in Spain or climb the Pyrenees.
The
highest sand dune in Europe is Dune de Pyla
in the Arachon Bay, 60 km south of Bordeaux.
At 107m high you have a
spectacular view of the coast and inlet bordered by the forests and on
very clear days you can see as far as the Pyrenees.
